Softball prep roundup: Skyline, Strasburg softball seasons come to end in state quarters

Skyline's softball season came to an end in an 18-0 road loss to New Kent in the Class 3 state quarterfinals on Tuesday. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

New Kent scored four runs in the first, four runs in the third, and 10 runs in the fourth.

New Kent's Alline Alexander started the bottom of the first with a single. With one out, New Kent's Morgan Berg singled off Skyline starting pitcher Peyton Kaufman.

New Kent's Hannah Tober singled to load the bases. Abby Kegley reached on an error to score a run. With two outs, another Skyline error allowed three more runs to score for a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Tober drew a walk, and Kegley reached base on a Skyline error. Kennedy Ziglar's RBI single made it 5-0.

New Kent's Leah Rounds then hit a three-run homer over the right-field fence for an 8-0 lead.

The Trojans added 10 more runs in the bottom of the fourth for an 18-0 lead. New Kent had nine hits in the inning. The Hawks used three different pitchers in the inning.

Tober had two doubles in the fourth inning and finished with three total hits, four runs scored, and three RBIs to lead the Trojans. Alexander also had three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI for New Kent.

Berg completed a complete game one-hitter for the Trojans. She allowed just one hit and struck out seven.

Skyline's Makenna Amos had a single for the Hawks’ lone hit.

The loss ended a strong season for Skyline. It was the fourth state appearance in the last five seasons for Skyline.

The Hawks finished 17-7 on the season and had an 11-game winning streak until losing their final two games.

Skyline has eight seniors Madison Jenkins, Kaufman, Jamie Kelly, Olivia Lacombe, Riley Look, Kiley McGuire, Maddy Payne, and Ashton Spiker that the Hawks will have to replace next year.

New Kent will play either Rustburg or Northside in the Class 3 state semifinals on Friday in Fredericksburg.

King William 14, Strasburg 1, 5 innings

The Rams young squad fell to the Cavaliers on the road in a Class 2 state quarterfinal on Tuesday. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

King William scored four runs in the first and four runs in the second, with one in the third and five in the fourth. Strasburg scored its only run in the second.

King William's Natalie Reid led off the bottom of the first with a single to center field. With one out, King William's Taylor Johnson hit an RBI double off Strasburg starting pitcher Ava Mayhew for a 1-0 lead.

Jillian Smith reached on an error, and Adrian Kirby's sacrifice fly RBI made it 2-0. Back-to-back errors by Strasburg scored two more runs for a 4-0 King William lead.

The Rams cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the second. Strasburg's Kiersten Wiseley and Rylie Arnold had back-to-back one-out singles off King William starting pitcher Johnson.

Strasburg's Arleigh Mason followed with another single to load the bases. Strasburg's Addison Morgan's RBI single cut the lead to 4-1. Johnson was able to record back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam.

King William responded in the bottom of the second. With one out, Reid drew a walk, Payton Lewis followed with a single, and Johnson drew another walk to load the bases.

Wiseley came in to relieve Mayhew. With two outs, Kirby hit an RBI single, and three more runs scored on an error for an 8-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third King William scored another run on a Strasburg error. Two more errors in the fourth helped lead to five runs for the Cavaliers.

Strasburg was led at the plate by Morgan with two hits and an RBI, and Sophia Reynolds with a double. Arnold, Mason and Wiseley each had a single for Strasburg. The Rams committed seven errors in the game.

The Rams (16-9) had a lot of success this season as a young squad with three freshmen and four sophomores.

Strasburg will lose three seniors, Brooklyn Henderson, Reese Moxley, and Reynolds to graduation.

King William will play James River in the Class 2 state semifinals in Troutville.
